Since it’s winter here in Minnesota, and we’re all hanging out inside (unless you’re well, you know… truly Minn-e-so-tah-n), and we’re all dreaming of spring… the season of outdoor maintenance. So I thought it would be a good time to talk about preparing your home for sale by increasing its curb appeal with some TLC on the outside.
If you missed our first post about preparing to sell your home (interior paint), you can find it here.
Preparing Your Home for Listing
Part II – Home Exterior
The exterior of a house is one of the most important aspects of showing a home. It is an impactful first impression to a first buyer, whether you prepare for it or not, so it’s best if it’s a good thing!
Spruce up the Spruce Trees
Start with a good cleaning and assessment of everything out doors, and make a list. Do you need to reseed or lay down sod where your grass hasn’t grown over the years or has been destroyed (i.e. pets)? Do you have shrubs that should have been replaced a few years ago?
Once you have the items on your list, consider sorting it by one of the following ways: Type, budget or resources needed (you vs a professional). Establish a reasonable timeline with your budget attached to accomplish the items on your list and then grab a shovel and dig in.
Landscaping and Hardscaping
Don’t forget the sidewalks, driveways and walkways
Start with a good cleaning, and make any repairs as needed. Check your flower beds for broken edging (especially if plastic), and make repairs if the weather has been too rough on it.
If you have any water features or unique elements in your landscaping, make sure they are clean, working properly and in good working condition.
Greet them with a fresh “hello”
An easy to freshen up the exterior of your home is to paint your front door! One of the easier home DIY projects, it can completely change the feel of your home when approached by a potential buyer.
Pinterest is a great place to find color palettes for things like this. Just type in the color (close is good) of your siding and trim, and add whatever color you are thinking of for your door with “palette” at the end of the list of colors. Pinterest will show you some great color palette ideas that will go really well with the colors of your home.
